Herbs are a gift from nature. They are very versatile and can be used as food, medicine and health supplements. Herbs have been an important part of life since the beginning of time.  They were used as remedies for various ailments long before modern medicine was invented. Modern scientific research often confirms their beneficial properties.  Today they are also used as a preventative measure and as a nutritional supplement. Herbs are rich in vitamins, minerals, chlorophyll, natural antibiotics and antioxidants. The great thing about herbs  is they are totally natural and contain no synthetic chemicals.  Different parts of plants are used, roots, seeds and nuts and their shells, oil and resin, berries or fruit, tree and vine barks.

If possible buy natural organic supplements.  It is important to to follow the recommended dose as some are toxic if taken in high doses. If you have a medical condition, are pregnant or nursing,  or take medication regularly, check with your doctor before taking vitamins and supplements. Please note that simply because herbs are "natural" treatments, they are not necessarily free from side effects.  See bottom table for some common supplements  and their side effects/contraindications.
